Edu2.0 Workshops

  • Discuss with Meredith having these as webcasts

Education and Web 2.0 - January 14th

During this workshop we will discuss Web 2.0 (or social media) technologies from an individual and group learning perspective. We will explore these technologies in breadth rather than depth and focus on a number of learning theories that can be applied to the use of Web 2.0 technologies in learning. We will discuss how the technology and theory combine to create your personal learning environment. The theme of this workshop will be discussing how social media (or Web 2.0) applies the practices described by current learning theories.

Edu2.0: RSS, Readers and Blogging - February 3rd

During this workshop we will explore internet publishing through the protocol standard known as RSS. We will look at how the RSS standard provides notification and enables content publishing and subscription. We will also look at how internet software can be utilized to subscribe to RSS allowing you to create your own personalized magazine on content of interest to you. We will also explore the technologies that allow blogging and how RSS fits within these blogging technologies.

Edu2.0: Tagging - February 11th

During this workshop we will explore the idea of knowledge classification through the creation of taxonomies, folksonomies and tagging. Tagging allows a person or people to mark internet content using an approach where they define the keywords or ontology that best describes the content as it makes sense to them. Tagging adds depth to internet search as it allows you to search the past query results you have tagged as meaningful. Tagging provides a “book-marking” approach that can be shared by individuals, groups, organizations and communities. Tagging could be considered social book-marking of internet content. The strength of social book-marking is in its ability for you to follow the activities of other people who you share interests.

Edu2.0: Wikis - February 24th

During this workshop we will explore wikis and the phenomenon of mass collaboration. We will look at how people collaborate in creating knowledge using the read / write internet. We will look at how wikis self organize and how wiki practices have been built to ensure content quality and, surprisingly, conflict resolution techniques. We will discuss how the wiki based edit-revert cycle increases quality and provides metrics for determining content quality. In this workshop we will also explore the practices that create featured articles and educational resources. We will look at the future of wikis where they begin to consider author reputation and how hey will impact publishing.
